Beyond the Buzzwords: An Honest Conversation on Energy and Healing with Madeleine from Hoof + Paw

For this edition of Women of the Craft, I’m joined by Madeleine, founder of Hoof and Paw, an energy healer, space holder and guide for women seeking deeper connection, healing and community.

In this conversation, Madeleine shares the journey behind her business, how her work has transformed over the years, and the power of creating spaces where women can gather, heal and reconnect with themselves.

Meet Energy Healer, Madeleine:

Madeleine started her business nine years ago after leaving behind her London-based career, spontaneously booking a one-way ticket to Australia and stepping into the unknown. It was one of the most important decisions she ever made, ultimately leading her to create the business she has today.

After eight incredible years of building her wellbeing crystal and energy-infused candle company, designed to transform energy within a space. Madeleine has since evolved her work beyond the candle and into in-person experiences, working with energy in a more collective way.

Through women’s circles, retreats, and one-to-one healings, she brings women together from across Oxfordshire and beyond.

Hoof + Paw began by fusing aromatherapy and crystals. What did that early work teach you about how energy actually moves through physical form?

"Energy is such a broad topic but it’s one I love and could talk about all day. We live in a world which is incredibly fast paced and our energy is pulled in multiple directions on a daily basis, therefore it’s no surprise a lot of us feel exhausted, scattered, dysregulated and all of the above! Our energy is no longer flowing how it should be

There are so many ways to help balance our energy and get it flowing again. I chose to work with crystals and essential oils to help shift the energy. Not just in our bodies but in our spaces around us too - I did this through merging crystals and essential oils into candles. I did the hard work of creating it, (whilst also setting specific intentions) so all you had to do is light the candle to feel the benefits. Energy is an ever changing thing and we have the ability to change it in our physical bodies."

Crystals are having a cultural moment. Do you think we’re simply romanticising them, or finally remembering their power and role on earth?

"This is a great question, I feel that there is an excitement within the crystal energies. They want to help but they want to help in the right way. ‘Discernment’ is a big word for this year and we really do need to apply this to where we buy our crystals from. Making sure the ethics and their origins are in good stead.

This is why I love your company, I know when I purchase from you they will have been sourced lovingly and ethically. I don’t think it’s a co-incidence that crystals became “popular” at the time that they did (2020 a lot was happening and people needed extra support). I would definitely agree it’s more of a remembering."

Energy knows no distance, but we’re curious, what’s your embodied experience when you’re transmitting Reiki remotely and how do your clients tend to experience it on the other end?

"The Reiki and energy work I do constantly blows my mind. I offer distance reiki which allows me to work with clients all over the world. I am very visual with my healings and before each healing I ask to be taken to the root cause of the issue - this could be in this life, or it could be in past life. I also work with angel, crystal, goddess and galactic energies depending on what is needed. I always send feedback to the client with any visuals and messages that I get during the healing.

I love hearing the feedback from clients too - having the confirmation from their end is of course great to hear. They’ll often have felt the energy physically run through their body with positive shifts. I’ve had multiple clients also receive the same message or visual themselves, which is incredible. The mirroring is confirmation that the energy work we do is very, very real. I’ve been working with energy for many, many years and it just continues to amaze me."

Women’s circles have become a modern ritual of return. From an energy healer’s perspective, what’s really happening in that space, energetically, psychologically, and spiritually - and why do you feel this work is so vital right now?

"They really have become a necessity for a lot of women. To be in a space with other women who are intentional with how they use their energy is so powerful. It’s empowering!

This is because when we work together the power around it magnifies. Sitting in circle together - be it in meditation, chat or creatively, creates a vortex of power between us all. This is why in my circles I make sure the energy we create is very intentional.

We want to be calling in balance and peace and empowerment. We want to be releasing love and happiness and joy. Coming to a women’s circle isn’t just for the individual - it creates a knock on effect to those around us.

With every circle more light spreads out into the world and right now we are at a pivotal tipping point in the collective energy. Huge shifts are happening on the planet and we need to hold the line - by this I mean, sit in love. Sit in that higher frequency, and that starts with us."

Much of modern spirituality has become polished and performative. How do you stay connected to the deeper, more honest layers of your work beyond the noise?

"Being spiritual doesn’t mean we have to be any certain type of person. For me being spiritual is by listening to your own body, listening to your intuition and YES there are some amazing tools to help us get there BUT it doesn’t care how you dress or what you eat or how many times you do yoga. It doesn’t care if you meditate or do your daily gratitudes. It’s your own personal experience and you can do it however you want."

If you stripped it all back; the tools, the rituals, the language - what remains at the core of your practice and women’s circles? What’s the truth that everything else is built on?

"Women supporting other women. Coming together with no judgement and just being there for each other. That in itself is healing enough."

Your meditation journeys feel like art forms in themselves. What inspires your creative process and what do you hope people experience or shift through these journeys?

"Thank you! Very kind of you to say. As I mentioned previously, I am a very visual person which definitely ties into my creativity.

I love taking people on a journey, somewhere they can escape to and immerse themselves in a magical world whilst also connecting back in with themselves again. A time to receive the messages and healing that is needed in the process too."

The word ‘protection’ gets thrown around a lot in energy work. What’s your real-world approach to keeping your energy field intact and why does it matter?

"Oh my goodness, another topic I could talk about all day long. There are so many different ways to help protect your energy (if you are interested more in this I did a zoom session on energy protection which is on the website). We can pick up energies that aren’t ours every day, so it’s good to be mindful of this before it bogs us down too much!

If I feel like my energy has been drained I make sure to take time to myself. Showers are my go to - every day I visualise any energies that aren’t mine to wash down the drain.

Real life: Most people do these things instinctively anyway but I try not to go anywhere or surround myself with people that make me feel uncomfortable (this goes for social media too).

If I feel like my energy has been drained I make sure to take time to myself. Showers are my go to - every day I visualise any energies that aren’t mine to wash down the drain. But yes- I do practice energetic protection, ideally daily but especially in places I know will be busy.

Can you recall a defining moment in your work or life, when you knew energy was real, not as a concept, but as a physical truth?

"Gosh, there are so many moments. I’ve been very sensitive to energies since I was very young so it’s difficult to pin point. As a teenager I was obsessed with the moon (still am) and I very quickly noticed how the energy shifted each time there was a full moon. However it wasn’t until my late teens that I started to experience things more intensely.

I started to connect with spirits (unintentionally) and that was a huge defining moment in how I worked with my energy, protected my energy and mastered energy also. Energy work is a constant work in progress and it’s exciting to see where it will lead me next."

And finally, are there any spiritual resources such as oracle decks, crystals or books that really shifted your mindset or perspective in your own healing journey?

"My go to crystal will always be the QUEEN of crystals - Clear Quartz. You can program her for literally anything. I wear a clear quartz around my neck every day which also doubles up as a pendulum.

Oracle cards are always a hands reach away and I find it great to get clarity on a situation.

I have a huge amount of crystal books and spiritual type books but the books that have actually had the biggest shift for me recently are the Romantasy books - ACOTAR especially. If you know - you know! It’s like walking into another dimension, healing and empowering all in one. You see - spirituality isn’t always the most obvious!

Lastly, I’d like to mention Human Design. It’s helped me understand myself better, my kids better and those around me better too."
